Location
Welcome to “Thunderbolt Ranch”, where the A-10 Thunderbolts were built! The address of the facility is 18450 Showalter Rd., Building 8 Hagerstown, MD 21742. GPS directions get you close, but not quite there. If you are heading East on Showalter Rd (away from I-81) you will come to a traffic light at Crayton Blvd. Make a left at the light (heading North) and head to the end of the row of buildings until you come to a large white dome hanger with a humongous Hagerstown Aviation Museum on the front of it. You can park in a spot there.
The facility is located within the Hagerstown Aviation Museum at Hagerstown Airport. The airport used to belong to Fairchild-Republic and is where the famed A-10 Thunderbolt was built.
The museum is hosting an AirPower History Tour, June 4-5, 2024. The event is not included in your SPRAT course registration, but it is worth checking out as it is a pretty cool event.
There are several hotels in the area. A Hampton Inn and a Wyndham are (almost) within walking distance. A few exits south, by the Valley Mall, there are several other options as well.
Lots of historical sight-seeing to do in the area as well. If Civil War history is your thing, 25 minutes due South is Antietam Battlefield and 45 minutes Northeast is Gettysburg.
The best deep dish pizza IN THE WORLD can be found about 10 minutes south at Rad Pies pizza. Seriously, it was voted as the best pan pizza in the world at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas in 2022.
