Backcountry Rescue and Technical Training Workshop

Course Overview

This Backcountry Rescue and Technical Training Course offers a comprehensive program that combines essential backcountry rescue techniques with a focus on providing technical support in remote, high-mountain environments. This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to emergencies in challenging wilderness settings.

Course takes place from 0830 – 1600 each day.

Course Highlights

Rope Rescue Techniques: Students will dive into the world of rope rescue, learning essential skills such as knot tying, anchor building, and systems use. These skills are tailored to the challenging terrain of high mountain environments, ensuring that participants are well-prepared for real-life rescue scenarios.

Self-Rescue Training: In the backcountry, self-reliance is crucial. Participants will learn how to assess and address their own emergency situations, enabling them to make critical decisions and take action when needed.

Mountain Modifications: Mountain rescue requires specialized techniques. This course incorporates mountain modifications into traditional rescue methods, giving students the ability to adapt their skills to challenging alpine conditions with minimal gear.

Problem-Solving: Complex mountain rescue problems demand creative solutions. Our program dedicates significant time to developing strategies for tackling these challenges effectively and efficiently.

Technical Rope Systems: The training will focus on the choices backcountry rescue teams may be able to make when moving and operating in remote areas. The systems presented will predominantly be built with 11mm and 9.5mm ropes.

Theory and Practice: The program will be a 50/50 mix of theory and practice. The theory component will work up to the understanding required to justify the use of reduced weight systems and to determine what factor of safety they offer and correctly identify any compromises. This workshop will introduce and explore some of the physics that can underpin a deep understanding of many of the techniques used by roping technicians. Theoretical and practical sessions will focus on equipment, knots, ratings, friction management, and mechanical advantage. We will also explore some of the misconceptions that are commonly taught as fact.

Equipment Selection: One of our greatest challenges lies in selecting and using the most appropriate equipment for any task. When it comes to choosing between team rescue and partner rescue gear, it’s important to consider the nature of the mission and the size of the team. For larger groups, team rescue gear may be the way to go as it allows for multiple rescuers to work together in a coordinated effort. However, for smaller groups or solo missions, partner rescue gear may be more suitable as it allows for quick and efficient self-rescue in case of emergency.
